Washing Different Types Of Fabric

Washing different types of fabric requires some knowledge on how it will react to external conditions. To keep your favorite clothes looking like new for years to come you need to take care of them in a way that will preserve their original state.

Fashion is cyclic.

Thus, keeping the clothes that you are no longer wearing looking like new may come in handy with time. You should invest your money on high quality pieces that will last you for a long time. Hence caring for them in the right way becomes an important part of your routine.

Lets get stared with one of the most commonly used material…

Polyester

Polyester, considered the “wonder fiber” of the 20th century, makes for durable, easy-to-wash garments that come in a wide variety of colors.

As Polyester is resistant and durable it should still not be washed or dried under hot conditions.  Thus, using warm water and tumble drying the item is your best bet.

Friction makes polyester conducive to static electricity. Prevent yourself from getting shocked or your clothes from sticking to your body by removing items from the dryer while they’re still slightly damp. This will prevent wrinkles and avoid a static buildup.

A more negative aspect of polyester is it holds stains really steadily. You need to try hard in order to get rid of some of them sometimes. One thing you may try is rubbing a stain remover over the stained area and letting it stay on for 10-20 minutes before washing it off.

Polyester is a fiber that many times gets mixed in with other fibers to provide some durability. You should still check the washing instructions provided on the garment. Washing different types of fabric may require some additional adjustments to your wash.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural fiber that is a worldwide favorite for comfortable, versatile clothing.

A lot of cotton clothing is pre-shrunk which makes it very durable. If the cotton is not pre-shrunk it will shrink if not washed in cold water. You should also air dry these items in a shaded area. Thus, first checking your clothing label is the way to go.

If the specific cotton clothing item has been pre-shrunk it can be washed in cold or warm water. Line-dry them in shade to avoid yellowing. For white cotton, wash with bleach on a hot water setting.

Over drying cotton will encourage shrinking. Dry cotton clothing at a lower heat and remove them from the dryer while still fairly cool. Drying your cotton in a setting that is too high can also cause the appearance of irreversible stains especially on white pieces.

To maintain the softness and elasticity of your cotton items use half the amount of detergent followed up with an additional rinse cycle.

Most silk items should not be machine washed. When dry cleaning is not available, hand washing is your best option. Hand wash all your silk items in in lukewarm to cold water separate from other items. Use gentle detergent or even baby shampoo should be fine. When in doubt always check your detergent on a small piece of fabric first.

Do not tumble dry your silk garments. Silk does not do well with extreme heats. After washing, roll the garment in a towel to press out the moisture and hang to dry. Press with a warm iron when needed.

Cashmere

Cashmere is a natural fiber woven from goat hair. The fiber makes some of the softest and comfiest knits around.

To keep your cashmere sweaters looking like new you should dry clean them whenever possible. To ensure the items keep their shape they should be folded when stored to retain its shape. Thus, never hang cashmere scarves or sweaters.
